The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an increase in stipends for medical and dental trainees in government medical and dental institutions across the state. The revision provides a 10% hike for MBBS and BDS interns and a 5% increase for postgraduate and super-speciality medical trainees.
The revised stipend rates have been made applicable retrospectively from January 1, 2026, providing financial relief to medical students and trainees undergoing clinical training in government institutions.
10% Stipend Hike for MBBS and BDS Interns
Under the revised structure, the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns, also referred to as House Surgeons, has been increased to ₹28,497.
The earlier monthly stipend was ₹25,906. The increase is aimed at improving financial support for interns during their compulsory clinical training period.
5% Increase for PG, MDS and DNB Students
The government has also approved a 5% increase in stipends for postgraduate medical and dental trainees, including students pursuing PG degrees, PG diplomas, MDS and DNB programmes.
The revised monthly stipend is:
PG/MDS/DNB 1st Year: ₹63,864
PG/MDS/DNB 2nd Year: ₹64,604
PG/MDS/DNB 3rd Year: ₹68,005
PG Diploma 1st Year: ₹63,864
PG Diploma 2nd Year: ₹64,606
The revision provides additional financial support to postgraduate trainees who undertake academic responsibilities along with extensive clinical duties.
Revised Stipend for Super-Speciality Students
Super-speciality medical trainees will also receive a 5% increase. Their revised monthly stipend will be:
1st Year: ₹84,525
2nd Year: ₹86,940
3rd Year: ₹89,355
These revisions cover trainees pursuing advanced medical education and clinical training in government institutions.
3.5% Annual Increase From 2027
In addition to the current revision, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved an annual 3.5% increase in stipend for eligible medical and dental trainees.
The annual revision will begin from January 1, 2027, providing a mechanism for periodic increases in stipend levels.
Background of the Stipend Revision
The decision follows demands raised by the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA) for an increase in stipends. The issue was considered amid discussions between junior doctors and the state authorities.
An expert committee examined the existing stipend structure, demands raised by junior doctors and stipend levels in neighbouring states before making recommendations. The Finance Department was also consulted before the revised rates were approved.
The development also followed legal proceedings before the Andhra Pradesh High Court concerning issues raised by junior doctors.
Government Orders Implementation
The Health, Medical & Family Welfare Department issued G.O.Ms.No. 141 approving the revised stipend structure.
The Director of Medical Education (DME) has been instructed to implement the revised rates and ensure that eligible trainees receive the increased stipends.
The revision is expected to result in an additional annual financial commitment of approximately ₹34.08 crore for the Andhra Pradesh government.
