Dhaka: Bangladesh is facing a serious public health challenge as a large-scale measles outbreak continues across the country alongside a sharp rise in dengue cases. The simultaneous outbreaks are putting increasing pressure on hospitals and healthcare facilities.

 

Measles outbreak reaches alarming levels

The measles outbreak, which began in March 2026, has spread across several parts of Bangladesh and has particularly affected children.

 

By early September, health authorities had reported approximately 167,000 suspected and confirmed measles cases, while the combined confirmed and suspected death toll had crossed 1,000. More than 147,000 patients have reportedly required hospitalisation since the outbreak began.

 

Severe measles infections can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, respiratory distress and encephalitis, increasing the risk of hospitalisation and death.

 

Vaccination gaps raise concern

Declining childhood vaccination coverage is considered one of the major factors contributing to the spread. Routine immunisation programmes were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, while subsequent healthcare and logistical challenges created further gaps.

 

Bangladesh has intensified vaccination activities to increase protection among children and help contain the outbreak.

 

Dengue cases rise rapidly

Alongside measles, Bangladesh is experiencing a significant surge in dengue infections.

More than 46,000 dengue cases and over 130 deaths had been reported by early September. Hospital admissions have also increased sharply, with more than 1,400 patients admitted in a single 24-hour period during the recent surge.

 

Chattogram has also reported a substantial increase in dengue cases. Health authorities have linked the seasonal rise to rainfall and the creation of stagnant-water breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes.

Officials have warned that dengue transmission could remain high during September, with the seasonal peak potentially occurring around late September or early October.

 

Healthcare system under pressure

The simultaneous rise in measles and dengue cases is placing considerable pressure on Bangladesh's healthcare system.

 

Hospitals are treating large numbers of children suffering from measles and its complications while managing a growing number of dengue patients. Some facilities have reported patient numbers exceeding their designated dengue-bed capacity.

 

The increased patient load is creating additional demand for hospital beds, healthcare workers, medicines and other essential resources.

 

Avian influenza surveillance continues

Bangladesh is also maintaining surveillance for avian influenza A(H5) following reports of human infections, including a case involving a child in Sylhet in 2026.

 

Health authorities investigated potential exposure among contacts and animals. However, investigations have not established sustained human-to-human transmission associated with these cases.

 

Public health measures remain important

Authorities are continuing vaccination campaigns and disease surveillance to control the measles outbreak. Maintaining high childhood immunisation coverage remains critical to preventing further spread.

 

For dengue, eliminating stagnant water and controlling Aedes mosquito breeding sites remain key preventive measures. Early medical attention is also important when individuals develop symptoms of severe infection.

Bangladesh is currently dealing with a major measles outbreak alongside a rapidly increasing dengue burden. The scale of the measles outbreak, combined with rising dengue hospitalisations, is putting significant pressure on the country's healthcare system.

 

Strengthening vaccination, improving mosquito control, ensuring timely treatment and maintaining disease surveillance will remain crucial to containing these outbreaks and preventing further loss of life.
