Botched Cataract Surgeries:   Gujarat Medical Council Suspends 3 Doctors

Ahmedabad: Taking an insight into botched cataract surgeries at an eye clinic and a clinical school, the Gujarat Clinical Board has as of late suspended 3 specialists. The state medical council has renounced the permit of an ophthalmologist at Ramanand Eye Hospital for a year after examining the case wherein 20 patients experienced obscured vision after post-cataract surgery medical procedure, while two different specialists at Amreli Clinical School have been suspended for quite a long time and 90 days separately following grumblings of super durable and fractional visual impairment after the medical procedure. Case 1: Ophthalmologist at Ramanand Eye Clinic As per the report, this case opened up with a complaint file by Dr. Nayan Jani, joint director (ophthalmology) at the wellbeing magistrate’s office, GMC on Jan 24 following objections got from 20 patients from Mandal close to Viramgam who experienced foggy vision in the wake of going through waterfall medical procedure at Ramanand Eye Clinic in Jan 2024.

Based on the complaint, the doctor was summoned to provide a statement. During the investigation of the case, the committee found that the protocols for the operation theatre were not maintained, and surgeries were carried out without qualified staff.

Suspending the ophthalmologist for a year,  the council stated “From the records and entries made before the panel, apparently proper care was not taken regarding pre-operative and post-operative measures to prevent infection during the surgeries in question. This easygoing careless methodology concerning liability isn’t excusable as it brought about desperate ramifications for the patients and can be considered as significant expert carelessness.

“Case 2: Specialists at Amreli Medical College For this situation, the licenses of an associate professor, and a senior resident doctor at Amreli Medical College were suspended for a considerable length of time and 90 days, separately, regarding messed up medical procedures in 2022 on 12 patients at the emergency clinic. Besides, the clinical administrator has been suspended for a considerable length of time.
