In a significant public health decision, the state of has officially declared a notifiable disease. This means that every diagnosed case must now be reported to the government health authorities, helping the state strengthen surveillance, early detection, and timely treatment.

The move aims to improve monitoring and prevent the spread of this infectious disease. Under the new directive, both government and private healthcare providers will be required to notify health officials whenever a case of leprosy is identified.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, and mucosal surfaces. Although it is curable with multi-drug therapy, delayed diagnosis can lead to permanent disabilities and social stigma.

By making leprosy notifiable, the Uttarakhand government hopes to:
• Strengthen disease surveillance across the state
• Ensure early diagnosis and treatment for patients
• Improve data collection for effective public health planning
• Reduce stigma through better awareness and reporting

This step aligns with India’s broader goal of eliminating leprosy and strengthening disease surveillance systems across states.

Public health experts have welcomed the decision, calling it an important step toward improving disease monitoring and ensuring that no cases go undetected.

With enhanced reporting mechanisms and coordinated healthcare efforts, Uttarakhand’s initiative could serve as a model for other states working toward a leprosy-free India.
