Kerala’s government just approved ₹643.88 crore to set up the Kozhikode Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplantation—a big step forward for advanced healthcare in the state. This move shows Kerala’s serious push to offer top-notch organ and tissue transplant care to its people.
A New Hub for Transplant Care
The plan is to build a one-in-all, transplant specialized centre where each and everything related to organ donation and transplantation comes together. Patients will get the full package—diagnosis, treatment, transplant surgery, rehab, research, and even professional training for healthcare workers. The institute isn’t just about treating people; it’s set to become a go-to spot for medical education and research, with plenty of training programs for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
Campus and Infrastructure
They’re building the institute on a 20-acre stretch at Chevayur in Kozhikode. The campus will have four blocks, each six stories high, with a total of 510 beds. There’ll be general wards, ICUs, high-dependency units, 16 operation theatres, and a dialysis centre. Research labs and modern diagnostic facilities are all part of the plan.
Developing in Phases
The project rolls out in two phases. First, they’ll set up 330 beds and 10 operation theatres. In the second phase, another 180 beds and 6 more operation theatres will come up. At the start, 14 specialty departments will run, with more on the way. Down the line, they’re looking at up to 31 academic courses in transplant medicine and related fields.
All-Round Transplant Services
The institute will manage a broader range of transplant: kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, pancreas, intestines, bone marrow, corneas, soft tissues, hands, and bones. This major advancement means a lot more people in Kerala and nearby states can get the benefits of advanced surgical care they need, closer to home.
Brief Setup and Management
While the main academic campus is under construction, the institute will work out as temporary facilities at Kozhikode Medical College. This way, taking care of patients could continue without a drawback. This institution cooperated with the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (K-SOTTO) to initiative organ donation, transplants, and related research throughout Kerala.
