In a landmark reform for India’s medical entrance examination system, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) will shift completely to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format starting from 2027. The announcement comes amid nationwide concerns following the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy and the subsequent cancellation of the examination.
The decision marks one of the biggest structural changes in the history of NEET-UG and is aimed at improving transparency, security, and credibility in the examination process. According to the Education Ministry, the move is intended to reduce the risk of paper leaks, strengthen exam monitoring, and modernize the testing infrastructure across the country.
Why the Government is Shifting NEET to Online Mode
The transition to CBT mode comes after massive outrage over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, which affected lakhs of aspirants nationwide. The government admitted there had been a “breach” in the examination process and announced strict corrective measures, including a CBI investigation and a complete review of exam security systems.
While addressing the media, Dharmendra Pradhan stated that computer-based examinations are comparatively more secure than traditional OMR-based offline tests. He also assured students that the government would implement stronger technological safeguards to prevent future irregularities.
NEET-UG 2027: What Could Change?
As per initial reports, the government is considering conducting the exam over multiple sessions across several days, similar to other national-level computer-based exams such as JEE Main. Reports suggest that NEET-UG 2027 could be conducted in nearly 20 sessions over a period of 10 days with score normalization methods being introduced to maintain fairness among candidates appearing in different slots.
Key expected changes include:
Fully computer-based online examination
Multiple exam sessions
AI-enabled monitoring systems
Enhanced cybersecurity protocols
Stronger candidate verification systems
Reduced dependence on physical question papers
These changes are expected to make the examination process faster, more transparent, and less vulnerable to organized malpractice networks.
Experts Welcome the Move
Several education experts and coaching professionals have welcomed the decision, calling it a necessary step to restore trust in India’s largest medical entrance examination. Experts believe that online examinations can significantly reduce logistical challenges and help maintain exam confidentiality more effectively.
However, some concerns remain regarding the digital divide in rural areas, internet accessibility, and the availability of computer infrastructure for students from remote regions. The government is expected to address these concerns before implementing the new system nationwide.
Re-NEET UG 2026 Scheduled for June 21
Alongside the CBT announcement, the Education Minister also confirmed that the cancelled NEET-UG 2026 examination will be reconducted on June 21, 2026. All previously registered candidates will be allowed to appear without paying any additional fee.
The National Testing Agency is likely to release fresh admit cards and updated examination guidelines in the coming weeks.
A Turning Point for Medical Entrance Exams in India
The shift to a computer-based NEET examination represents a major transformation in India’s competitive exam ecosystem. With more than 20 lakh students appearing for NEET every year, the move is expected to redefine how large-scale entrance exams are conducted in the country.
While the success of the reform will depend heavily on execution and technological preparedness, the government’s announcement signals a strong push toward digitization, accountability, and stricter examination security in the future.
For students preparing for upcoming NEET examinations, adapting to online mock tests and CBT-style practice may soon become an essential part of preparation strategy.
