Raipur: In a significant boost to medical education in Chhattisgarh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the establishment of five new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) for the 2026–27 academic session. With this approval, the state will gain 250 additional MBBS seats, creating more opportunities for aspiring medical students.

Each of the newly approved colleges has been permitted to admit 50 MBBS students, resulting in a total addition of 250 seats from the upcoming academic session.

Five New Government Medical Colleges Approved

The newly approved Government Medical Colleges will be established at:

   Geedam (Dantewada)

   Kunkuri (Jashpur)

   Manendragarh

   Janjgir-Champa

   Kawardha (Kabirdham)

The expansion is expected to improve access to quality medical education while strengthening healthcare services across several underserved regions of the state.

Approval Granted After Addressing NMC Deficiencies

The proposals for these colleges had initially been rejected by the NMC due to deficiencies related to infrastructure, faculty availability, medical equipment, and mandatory documentation.

Following the rejection, the Chhattisgarh Government undertook the necessary corrective measures and submitted compliance reports. After reviewing the improvements, the National Medical Commission granted approval for all five colleges.

Major Boost for Medical Education and Healthcare

With the addition of these new institutions, Chhattisgarh's medical education capacity will see a notable increase.

Before the approval, the state had 15 medical colleges (10 Government and 5 Private) offering 2,330 MBBS seats. After the approval of the five new Government Medical Colleges, the total number of medical colleges will rise to 20 (15 Government and 5 Private), while the total MBBS intake will increase to 2,580 seats.

The move is expected to provide greater opportunities for NEET-qualified students seeking MBBS admissions within the state.

Chief Minister Welcomes the Decision

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai welcomed the approval, calling it a landmark achievement for Chhattisgarh's healthcare and medical education sectors.

He stated that the new medical colleges will not only expand opportunities for aspiring doctors but also serve as centres for quality medical education, specialized healthcare services, and medical research. The institutions are also expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in rural and remote districts while reducing the need for patients to travel to larger cities for advanced treatment.

The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for their continued support in enhancing the state's healthcare infrastructure.

What This Means for MBBS Aspirants

The approval of five new Government Medical Colleges marks a major development for medical aspirants in Chhattisgarh. The addition of 250 MBBS seats is expected to improve admission opportunities for NEET-qualified students while supporting the state's long-term goal of producing more qualified doctors to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population.
