NMC Warns Medical Colleges Against MBBS Admissions Beyond Approved Seats for 2026–27

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a strict advisory to all medical colleges across the country, directing them not to admit MBBS students beyond their approved intake capacity for the 2026–27 academic session. The directive has been released by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) to ensure transparency and strict compliance with the provisions of the NMC Act, 2019.

Admissions Must Be Limited to Approved Seats

According to the latest NMC notice, every medical college must admit students only against the number of MBBS seats officially sanctioned by the Commission. Institutions have been clearly instructed not to exceed their approved intake under any circumstances.

The Commission emphasized that admissions beyond the sanctioned capacity are strictly prohibited and will be treated as a violation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

Strict Action Against Violations

The NMC has warned that any medical college found admitting students beyond its approved seat capacity will face strict regulatory and penal action. The Commission has reiterated that institutions must strictly adhere to the approved seat matrix while conducting admissions for the current academic year.

This move aims to strengthen transparency in the medical admission process and prevent unauthorized admissions that could adversely affect students.

Directions Issued to Counselling Authorities

The advisory is not limited to medical colleges alone. The NMC has also instructed the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and all State Counselling Authorities to ensure that admissions are conducted strictly within the approved seat matrix.

Counselling authorities have been directed not to allocate or permit admissions beyond the number of seats approved by the NMC. In case any discrepancy is found regarding the sanctioned intake of a medical college, the matter must be referred to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for clarification before proceeding with the counselling process.

Ensuring a Transparent Admission Process

The Commission has called upon all medical colleges, counselling bodies, universities, and other stakeholders involved in the MBBS admission process to strictly comply with these guidelines. The objective is to ensure that every admission is made against a legally approved seat, thereby protecting students from future complications arising out of unauthorized admissions.

The latest directive reinforces the NMC's commitment to maintaining transparency, accountability, and regulatory compliance in medical education across India.

What This Means for MBBS Aspirants

For students participating in MBBS counselling for the 2026–27 academic session, the advisory provides greater assurance that admissions will be conducted only against officially approved seats. Aspirants are advised to verify the approved seat matrix of their preferred medical colleges and participate only in recognized counselling processes conducted by the MCC or respective State Counselling Authorities.

As the counselling process progresses, students should remain updated with official notifications issued by the National Medical Commission and counselling authorities to avoid misinformation and ensure a smooth admission process.
