Seasonal fever including viral flu, dengue, and other common infections, are generally short-lived in healthy people. Whereas, diabetic people may take double the time to recuperate. Such delayed healing is associated with different factors related to diabetes which interfere the body’s ability to fight pathogens and heal fast.

Major reasons for the delayed recovery time are:

I. Weakened Immune System

White blood cells that are the units of the body for combating pathogens become less efficient under high or poorly controlled blood sugar scenarios. Therefore, the body gets rid of viruses or bacteria at a slow pace leading to longer fever and other symptoms.

2. Poor Blood Circulation

Sugar in the blood stream can slowly destroy vessels after a while, thus diabetes can cause this condition. When circulation is compromised, the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to tissues is reduced thereby the healing process is slow and the recovery time prolongs.

3. Blood Sugar Levels That Vary with Fever

It is well known that infections and fever stimulate the production of hormones that give rise to blood glucose levels. These ups and downs make the body incapable of repairing itself and at the same time, tiredness and weakness get intensified.

4. Increased Risk of Dehydration

Most of the times, fever comes along with fluid leak via sweat and the body’s refusal to take food and drink. In diabetic patients, dehydration may become a factor that can raise blood sugar levels more and recovery can be delayed.

5. Greater Probability of Complications

People with diabetes are at risk of developing serious bacterial infection after seasonal viral infections. This will increase the time of being ill and the need for medical care intervention.

Conclusion

Patients that have diabetes are slow in recovering from seasonal fever due to their compromised immune system, poor blood flow, instability of blood sugar levels, and risk of having complications is high. Besides the proper blood glucose management, hydration, medical consultation, and rest are also very important in this situation to help the recovery process be faster and to prevent the occurrence of other health ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌problems.
